Crested Cranes head coach, George Lutalo, has attributed Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Senegal in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Group A opener to a lack of concentration, poor defending and low self-confidence when in possession.
“We had a good start to the game in the opening minutes but shortly after the half-hour mark, the players lost concentration, defended poorly and their confidence going forward also dropped,” explained Lutalo.
Despite this defeat, Lutalo remains optimistic about Uganda advancing to the next round where he believes his side will beat Morocco and Burkina Faso, the other two games left in the group.
“We still have hope of improving, there are two games. The mistakes we made have been identified and by the time we face Morocco on Tuesday, we will be in a good position to get a positive result,” he said.
Uganda's defence was all over the place and conceded penalties off mistakes from Aisha Nantongo and Yudaya Nakayenze.
The Crested Cranes were wasteful on many occasions when scoring opportunities fell to Fazila Ikwaput and Fauzia Najjemba.
On Tuesday, Uganda takes on hosts Morocco, in a must-win game if Lutalo’s side is to maintain any hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds.
Morocco beat Burkina Faso in Saturday’s opener.
