Lira Town College's level of preparation ahead of the 2026 USSSA National U-20 Boys football championship is currently standing at 95%, authorities have revealed.
Levi Abong, the school headteacher, speaking to Vision Sport, said that requirements such as accommodation facilities, competition venues, water sources, sanitation facilities, and kitchens are currently in the final stage of upgrading and being readied for the championship.
"I want to reaffirm that Lira Town College is ready to accommodate 7,000 participants, spectators, and coaches that are set to convene here for the national boys' football championship, which is scheduled to run from May 10 to 20, 2026, marking a historic milestone for both the school and the wider Lango sub-region," said Abong.
Abong said that by the end of April, everything will be in place. Facilities such as football pitches, accommodation, sanitation, health services, and security are already arranged.
"Everything now is in place; we are waiting for that time of competition. The local business owners from Lira and neighboring districts have already secured business areas for themselves," said Abong.
According to him, the school has managed to secure a minimum of ten football pitches, enough classrooms for accommodation within the school premises, water and sanitation, as well as medical and security personnel.
Lawrence Egole, the Resident City Commissioner, confirmed their readiness and assured maximum security during the championship.
Egole mentioned that as athletes make their way to Lira City for the boys' football championship, the security team shall ensure that security operatives are deployed to all playing grounds and accommodation areas.
"We shall be restricting movement of participants during the night and early morning to allow security operatives to conduct their patrols smoothly," Egole stated.
He said the above measures are to counter any eventualities and ensure the safety of all participants and guests during the competition.
"I am so delighted that Lira Town College and the Lango sub-region were granted the mandate of hosting the national boys' football championship. We shall ensure that the games end successfully come May," said Denis Ogwal, the chairperson of USSSA Lango sub-region.
According to Ogwal, the zonal leadership and the Uganda Secondary Schools Headteachers Association (Lango Zone) have continued conducting several committee meetings alongside the USSSA secretariat to ensure that all necessities are in place.
The venues designated to host the national championship are Lira Town College, VH Public Primary School, Ireda Primary School, Dr. Obote College, St. Katherine Secondary School, Uganda Technical College Lira, Lango College, Lira Primary School, Lira Railway Seed Secondary School, Anai Primary School, Comboni College Lira, Dara Christian High School, Ayago Primary School, Erute Primary School, Canon Lawrence PTC, Demonstration School, and Mentor Secondary School.
