Buddu v Kyaggwe
At Mandela National Stadium Namboole
Kyaggwe withstood intense pressure from Buweekula during their second leg semifinal meeting at NTC Mubende grounds on Sunday to reach their first-ever Masaza Cup final.
The Bukunja Warriors (Kyaggwe), who had won the first leg 2-1 in Mukono eight days ago, arrived in Mubende as the underdogs.
Despite the odds stacked against them, Kyaggwe managed to hold onto their slim advantage and knock out Buweekula, a team widely tipped for victory due to their strength and consistency leading up to this stage of the tournament.
In front of a packed home crowd, Buweekula launched relentless attacks, but Kyaggwe stood firm, answering every challenge thrown at them.
Buweekula remained composed in the first half, knowing that a single goal would level the tie.
However, Kyaggwe’s well-organized defense, led by former UCU greats Godfrey Arijole and Geoffrey Gagganga, kept them at bay.
Early in the second half, Kyaggwe’s goalkeeper Elton Mwidu made a crucial goal-line clearance and sustained a serious injury in the process.
He was rushed to the hospital, but despite his absence, Kyaggwe’s defense continued to withstand the pressure.
Buweekula came close on several occasions, striking both posts four times, but luck was not on their side.
The heavy afternoon downpour also worsened the pitch conditions, making it difficult for both teams to perform at their best, especially for the Buweekula players, who were unable to capitalize on their chances.
In the end, Kyaggwe held on for a goalless draw, securing a historic 2-1 aggregate victory and advancing to the final.
In the other semifinal return leg, Buddu, two-time champions, came from behind to draw 1-1 with Kyadondo at Kitovu Sports Arena.
Super substitute Hudson Mbalire’s 84th-minute equalizer canceled out Ismail Ndifuna’s first-half strike to secure Buddu’s place in the final with a 4-2 aggregate win.
This marks the seventh time Buddu has reached the Masaza Cup final.
The final is set for November 2 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Bulemeezi are the defending champions but were eliminated in the group stage of the tournament.
Buweekula and Kyadondo will play in the classification match to determine which of the two finishes third and fourth, respectively.
