The Rugby Championship league kicks off on Saturday, February 7, 2026, with six fixtures lined up across the country.

The headline clash will see the Stanbic Black Pirates face the KCB KOBs Rugby Club at Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere, a fixture already billed as the game to watch.

For the Kampala Old Boys (KOBs), the new season begins under fresh leadership. Darren Rutagwera was elected chairman, replacing Dr. Living Stone Lugya at an assembly held at NOB View Hotel. The transition signals a renewed push to restore competitiveness on the pitch while strengthening the club’s long-term foundations.

Rutagwera has outlined three key priorities: restoring the club’s winning form, improving relations with the Uganda Rugby Union, and enhancing financial stability.

“Our focus is on improving performance by strengthening the coaching structure, placing the right people in key roles, and building a balanced and competitive squad,” Rutagwera said.

He will be deputised by Simon Kasito, with Richard Mutabazi serving as Secretary and Muriel Atai as Treasurer. Edwin Ssempebwa represents the players, while former captain Brian Odongo takes charge as Director of Rugby, tasked with guiding the club’s technical direction and instilling a winning mentality.

Founded in 1963, KOBs remain one of Uganda’s most decorated rugby clubs, boasting 13 premiership titles, nine Uganda Cup triumphs, and multiple National 7s championships.

Beyond the Pirates–KOBs showdown, the opening day features a full slate of fixtures. The Black Pearls face the Ewes in the women’s game at 2pm. Elsewhere, Walukuba meet Mongers, Impis host Warriors, Heathens take on newcomers Kakira Simba, Rhinos battle Victoria Sharks, and Jinja Hippos clash with Buffaloes.
