Kitovu, St. Mirium Duggan lead Fr. Grimes Chess

Springfield High School, Matugga sits second with 16 points after five wins and one draw, while Kitovu's Team B is third on 15 points, having registered one loss.

After six rounds of the Fr. Grimes National Schools Chess Championship at Ntare School, defending champions St. Henry's College Kitovu remain firmly on top of the open category standings with an unbeaten 18 points, with three rounds left to conclude the event.

 

Springfield High School, Matugga sits second with 16 points after five wins and one draw, while Kitovu's Team B is third on 15 points, having registered one loss.

 

In the primary open boys' category, defending champions St. Mirium Duggan have also maintained a perfect run, collecting the maximum 18 points after six rounds.

Holistic Junior School, Mitooma is second with 15 points, having lost one game, while Friends International Christian Academy Team A is third, also with a single loss.

 

In the secondary girls' category, Wampeewo Ntake Secondary School Team A leads with 16 points after five wins and one draw. Springfield High School, Matugga follows in second place with 15 points, while defending champions St. Andrew Kaggwa Gombe are third, also on 15 points but with a lower tie-break score.

 

In the primary girls' category, St. Mirium Duggan tops the standings with 16 points after one draw. Peak Primary School is second with 13 points, while Holistic Junior School lies third with 12 points after two losses.

 

The prestigious championship has attracted 230 teams. It features an open category for secondary schools, alongside separate girls' categories, as well as boys' and girls' sections in the primary division.

 

In a related development, Bank of Baroda has joined other financial institutions, including KCB Bank Uganda and Bank of Uganda, in supporting the championship. The bank donated two solar panels and a cash contribution of sh5.6 million towards the event.

 

While handing over the solar panels to Uganda Chess Federation president Andrew Bakiza, Managing Director Chandan Singh said schools provide an ideal platform to promote environmental conservation through the use of solar energy.

 

"This is part of our corporate social responsibility," Singh noted.

 

Bakiza commended the bank for its support, noting that teams will now receive more tangible rewards in addition to trophies.

 

The championship is being played over nine rounds using the Swiss-system tournament format. Participants played two rounds on Sunday, followed by three rounds on both Monday and Tuesday, with the final round set for today ahead of the prize-giving ceremony and departure.
