St. Mary’s College Kisubi has won the 2024 Gr. Grimes National Schools Chess Championship at St. Marks College Namagoma after winning 8 of the 9 games.
Kisubi started by beating the defending champion Kiira College Butiki A 3-1 and St. Henry’s College Kitovu 2.5 – 1.5.
In the girl’s category, St. Andrew Kaggwa Gomba retained the trophy and the captain Sarah Nakalyowa said the tournament was harder than the previous one.
"I thank the heads of the school because we got good training and this year, we hope to represent the country at the world school’s championship," said Nakalyowa after winning 8 out of the 9 games.
In the primary open category, it was St. Mariam Dagan and KCCA P.S both from Kamwokya in Kampala that finished first and second position respectively.
Both schools are coached by Patrick Mukasa.
In the girls' category, Peak Primary defended the accolade and is ready to represent the country again on the world stage, according to coach Jude Kalanzi.
