World champion Victor Kiplangat finished 15th in the Tokyo Marathon on Sunday morning, with a time (2:07:25) five minutes and 18 seconds behind the winning mark.

The winner, as most race previews predicted, turned out Kenyan, but it was not the Kenyan everyone anticipated.

Instead of the legendary Eliud Kipchoge, who finished sixth, top honours were claimed by Benson Kipruto, who posted a blistering mark of 2:02:16.

It was, in fact, a Kenyan 1-2-3, with Timothy Kiplagat and Vincent Kipkemoi claiming second and third respectively.

Those three were the only runners to post sub-2:05 times.

Kiplangat arrived in Tokyo with high hopes, but he will have to be content with a performance that has underlined how much improvement is required before the Paris Olympics in August.
