King’s College Budo had seven of their golfers among the top ten competitors, which helped them win the fourth edition of the inter-school golf championship played at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa on Tuesday.

The champions fielded over 70 players from different classes in various categories of the championship to ensure their title defence.  Budo won the event for the first time in Lugazi last year and at Serena had Daniel Tumwebaze leading the KCB Bank-sponsored event field with three-over 75.

Alex Kasumba (78), Elvis Munguditi (79) and Michael Mzungu, Owen Wafula, and Paul Wasswa, all with 80, as well as Nelson Omik (82), were the other players who contributed to the victory.

According to team captain Ethan Nkrumah, their team continues to grow as they encourage overall participation from all the students.

“The competition was tough, but with God’s grace, we managed to win this year’s competition as the overall winners’ boys and runners up in the 12-14 years category. So, my role today was to encourage and guide them where necessary because they were the ones who put in the hard work, so I’m grateful for the team and for all the efforts they have put in,” Nkrumah said.

“As a school, we train at the Palm Valley Golf Club course on weekends, and individually, we go back to our home courses during holidays and play as much as we can and also test the host venues before competition to ensure we get used to the greens.”

Shoma Christian Academy’s Abisha Miracle Namanya and The North Green School’s Arianna Jenny Tumwesigye were the overall individual winners in the boys and girls categories.

Kabojja International School had Kenan Tayebwa Karlton Luke Tayebwa finished first and third in the boys’ 10&Under category were Tamaris Christian International School’s Ithiel Hans Tayebwa was second.

Budo dominated the 15-18 with Mathew Katooro and Jeremiah Magembe top, while they also had two girls, Patricia Mbeiza and Desire Nabirye Mutesi, among the top three, alongside Trinity College Nabbingo’s Maria Lourdes in the 11-14 category. St. Joseph's Girls SSS Nsambya’s Nichole Martinez Nahabwe and Rainbow International School’s Zhenzhen LI were the best girls in the 15-18 category.

Les Brown, who organises the event in conjunction with KCB Bank, PGM Golf, Stawisha Golf Health & Wealth and Duara Green Nurseries, said the biggest aim of the championship was to ensure the sport is demystified and spread to as many people as possible.

“This year, we have international and local partners supporting us, so we look forward to continuing to grow this championship. The local golf clubs are creating environments to ensure many talents are championed, and we hope the clubs will continue supporting this championship,” Les Brown stated.

He said the biggest and greatest support for the event comes from the parents because they understand the value of the sport, and they are the biggest influencers of the schools to ensure the children compete.
