The 2026 Inter-School Golf Championship saw King's College Budo successfully defend their title in the high school category after posting a total gross score of 372 at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course in Kigo on Tuesday.

Budo achieved their third consecutive win, with players determined to maintain their dominance in the only sport the school has chosen to focus on.

After the victory, team captain Kyle Mugabi hailed the school management for providing training opportunities.

"We have been playing since 2025, and the school enabled us to play at various courses for management routines and practice, so we are able to adapt at many places," Mugabi noted.

Fielding a strong team of 57 boys and girls, Budo edged past a hard-fighting Kabojja International School, which finished second with a gross score of 411, to retain the coveted accolade.

The fifth edition of the championship attracted 16 schools in both secondary and primary school categories, showcasing Uganda’s emerging golf talent as young players rose to the occasion in a highly competitive environment.

The championship is regarded as the country’s premier inter-school golf competition, according to tournament director Les Brown, who also oversees the NCBA–US Kids Golf Series.

"Our intention is to grow the culture of golf development by creating partnerships between schools and golf clubs as a way of changing the perception and myth that golf is only a rich man’s game," Brown noted.

He added that even schools without land to establish golf courses can begin by hiring a coach and identifying space for a practice range.

"There are many golf coaches in the country. The coaches can then connect schools to golf clubs that are spread across the country and are willing to nurture young talent in the sport," he said.

Brown cited Mbarara, Fort Portal, Kilembe, Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Tororo, Arua, Namulonge, Kinyara, and Lugazi among the areas with golf courses willing to support schools interested in introducing the sport.

He explained that promoting golf in schools helps create a sustainable talent pipeline, noting that top players eventually phase out of active competition after several years.

Brown thanked all the participating schools and encouraged more institutions to register for the 2027 edition.
