All roads lead to Kasese as golfers gear up for the inaugural Kilembe Open Tournament, taking place from July 24–26.
This marks a revival of the once-renowned Hima Open Golf Tournament, the region’s biggest golf event, which had been on hiatus for three years.
Although the course has hosted smaller competitions like monthly mugs, the Kilembe Open is poised to be the club’s grandest event of the year.
The Kilembe Mines Golf Club, dating back to the 1950s, carries a rich legacy, having previously hosted prestigious events like the Uganda Open in the 1970s and 1980s.
Speaking at the tournament’s launch held at Uganda Golf Club in Kitante, Martin Osembo, corporate representative for Kilembe Mines Golf Club, said it's time for golfers to return to Kilembe and experience one of the country’s greatest sporting challenges.
“We foresee a successful and enjoyable event on our 7km, par-73 course—one of East Africa’s most prestigious,” said Osembo. “Teeing off while gazing across the national park offers a truly classical experience.”
He noted the club’s historical contribution to the sport, having nurtured talented golfers like Happy Robert, Ethan Nkembo, and Amon Bwambale, who went on to represent Uganda at national level.
“We hope to discover more young talent,” Osembo added.
The tournament kicks off Thursday with side bets, followed by junior categories (ages 4–18), and finishes with juniors and amateurs competing on Friday and Saturday.
Over sh35 million has been invested into the event—covering awards and logistics, including the unique Safari-themed 19th hole experience dubbed “Golf in the Jungle.”
“The course is set within a game park, which is why we’ve tied the 19th hole to tourism. It's not just a game—it’s an adventure,” Osembo explained.
