The London Marathon returns this Sunday, 26 April, promising a thrilling showdown among some of the world’s finest long-distance runners.

With a stacked elite men’s field, attention turns to both proven champions and rising stars ready to leave their mark on one of the most prestigious races on the global calendar.

Here is a look at the top contenders and what they bring to the table:

1 Sebastian Sawe (KEN) – PB 2:02:05

Defending champion Sebastian Sawe headlines the field with the fastest personal best among this year’s entrants. The 30-year-old returns to London determined to retain his crown, motivated by his victory at the Berlin Marathon in 2025. His form and pace make him the man to beat.

2 Jacob Kiplimo (UGA) – PB 2:02:23

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo continues to rise as one of the most formidable names in distance running. The 25-year-old world half-marathon record holder (57:20) finished second in London last year and claimed victory at the Chicago Marathon the same year. With two outstanding performances in his first two marathons, Kiplimo returns to London aiming for victory. He holds the second best time among his opponents.

3 Deresa Geleta (ETH) – PB 2:02:38

Deresa Geleta enters the race as a strong contender after securing silver at the Tokyo Marathon in 2025. At 30, he combines experience with consistency and will be looking to challenge for top honors. He comes into the race with the third best time among the top contenders.

4 Amos Kipruto (KEN) – PB 2:03:13

A former London champion, Amos Kipruto won this race in 2022 and brings a wealth of experience. The 33-year-old boasts six major marathon medals, including podium finishes in Berlin, Tokyo, and Chicago. His tactical awareness and endurance make him a serious threat.

5 Tamirat Tola (ETH) – PB 2:03:39

Tamirat Tola, winner of the New York City Marathon in 2023, is another seasoned competitor. He also holds bronze medals from both London (2023) and Tokyo (2022). At 34, his experience and championship pedigree keep him firmly in contention.

6 Geoffrey Kamworor (KEN) – PB 2:04:23

A multiple-time major medalist, Geoffrey Kamworor has an impressive record that includes two New York Marathon titles (2017, 2019). With seven marathon medals across major races, the 33-year-old’s depth of experience could prove decisive.

7 Joshua Cheptegei (UGA) – PB 2:04:52

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei remains one to watch. A three-time world champion over 10,000m, he is still finding his stride in the marathon, having completed three races so far.

Despite yet to secure a marathon victory, his steady improvement and strong personal best position him among the competitive field. His determination and transition from track dominance to road racing add an intriguing dimension to his London campaign.

With a blend of defending champions, record holders, and experienced marathoners, this year’s London Marathon promises a fierce battle. Whether it is Sawe’s title defense, Kiplimo’s quest for victory, or a surprise breakthrough from the chasing pack, the race is set to deliver excellent drama on the streets of London.
