KCCA’s struggles in the Uganda Premier League continued on Sunday with another disappointing performance against Maroons, where they settled for a goalless draw inside Luzira Prisons Grounds.
The result marked KCCA’s sixth consecutive league match without a victory, having endured three defeats and three draws since their last win in December—a 2-1 triumph over Wakiso Giants.
Despite a 2-0 win over Kuluva Rainbow in the Uganda Cup round of 32, courtesy of Derrick Nsibambi, hopes of translating that success into league form quickly faded.
KCCA failed to create significant chances against Maroons, leaving little indication of where a goal might come from, and their fans were seen banging the Luzira perimeter fence in frustration.
The first half saw KCCA fail to register a single shot on target, with Maroons goalkeeper Hassan Matovu largely untested. Forwards Nsibambi and Sadat Anaku struggled to break down a resolute Maroons defence, commanded by captain Ronald Orombi and Abel Eturude, who dominated aerial duels.
Frustrated by the horrible first-half display, KCCA coach Abdallah Mubiru made four early second-half substitutions, introducing Ashraf Mugume, Julius Poloto, Mustapha Mujuzi, and Bright Anukani for Saidi Mayanja, Shafik Kwikiriza, Haruna Lukwago, and Anaku.
However, the changes failed to ignite the attack, with KCCA continuing to struggle in the final third.
Their best chance came in the 90th minute when Arafat Usama latched onto a well-placed pass from Poloto, only to fire wide with the goalkeeper at his mercy. The missed opportunity summed up KCCA’s Sunday evening, as frustration mounted both on and off the pitch.
Mubiru, who is under increasing pressure to revive KCCA’s season, cut a dejected figure at full-time as his players walked off the pitch.
The result left KCCA seventh on the 16-team league table with 25 points from 18 matches, trailing joint league leaders NEC and Vipers—both on 40 points—by 15 points.
That gap could widen further, given that Vipers were set to face Mbarara City at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, before press time yesterday. A victory for Vipers would extend the lead to 18 points, further denting KCCA’s title aspirations this season.
Elsewhere, in Bombo Barracks, defending champions SC Villa suffered a 2-0 defeat to UPDF, extending their winless away run in the league to seven matches.
Brian Kalumba and Daniel Kitara netted for UPDF, a result that brought their side level with Villa on 24 points. Villa remains in eighth place, ahead on goal difference, while UPDF sits ninth.
