KCCA Netball Club finally got their hands on the league trophy they won at the end of December last year, three months since the historic moment, in a simple award ceremony that took place at the Copper Chimney Restaurant on Wednesday.

While the Kampala Capital City Authority side had to wait patiently for the federation to get its house in order, the pomp and excitement that should have brought happiness and joy was long overdue for coach Fred Mugerwa, who had advocated for his side to finally lift the long-coveted trophy.

“It was long overdue, but I think since they have finally handed over the trophy, this gives us the chance to present it to our bosses so that we can account for last year and propose our budget for the upcoming season,” stated coach Fred Mugerwa.

While it was a simple ceremony that lasted about two hours, Netball Uganda was determined to give the players something to celebrate, no matter how small.

Three trophies were handed out on the day, including the women’s Division Two title, which was won by Buddo Secondary School, while the men’s title was claimed by Kampala University.

KCCA won the Women’s Super League for the first time in their history, edging record champions NIC by a single point.

They were deserving of the great honour and were just as happy to finally get their hands on the trophie.

KCCA captain Shaffie Nalwanja was named MVP for her commanding defensive work, which allowed all other parts of the team to work smoothly.

The Netball Uganda president graced the ceremony alongside National Council of Sports Assistant General Secretary Milton Chebet and Sarah Chelangat the administrator in charge of Netball.

Ucanda appreciated the clubs, players and executive members for keeping things going despite the financial constraints.

“I would like you to clap for all the club owners in this country. We do not take them for granted; they invest funds in this sport. Many of you continued playing netball because of the people who invested in you, driven by their passion for the game,” stated Ucanda.

Netball Uganda is embarking on a very exciting season that will see the She Cranes take on the top 12 nations in the world at the Commonwealth Games later this year in Glasgow.

The netball season would not have been possible without the management of Hamz Stadium Nakivubo, who allowed the federation to use the two courts concurrently during the season.

The best four teams in the men’s and women’s leagues will represent Uganda at the East Africa Championships set for Nairobi, Kenya, in May.
