KCB Nkumba Women’s Volleyball Club has made a strong start in the ongoing CAVB Zone V Club Championship, securing a spot in the semifinals after two consecutive wins.
The team, tied with defending champions Kenya Pipeline at six points each atop Group A, has showcased impressive form in the tournament.
The Kenya Commercial Bank-sponsored team began their campaign on Thursday, February 27, with a dominant 3-0 victory (23-07, 25-11, 25-10) over Tanzania Prisons at the MTN Arena in Lugogo.
The following day, February 28, Nkumba faced a tough challenge in a thrilling Ugandan derby against Ndejje Elites Volleyball Club at the Old Kampala Arena. In a fiercely contested match, Nkumba edged the first set 25-23, but Ndejje fought back to win the next two sets 25-20 and 25-15, putting them one set away from victory.
However, Nkumba displayed remarkable resilience, winning the fourth set 25-22 to force a decisive fifth set. In a tense finale, Nkumba emerged victorious with a 15-10 win, sealing a hard-fought 3-2 victory.
On February 29, Nkumba faced defending champions Kenya Pipeline in a high-stakes match to determine the Group A winner ahead of the semifinals. Head coach Tonny Lakony expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete.
“We are not scared. Kenya Pipeline is a strong team, but we are stronger. Our target is to reach the finals this season, and the only way to prove this is by defeating last season’s champions,” said Lakony.
Meanwhile, Ndejje Elites, having lost both their matches to Kenya Pipeline and KCB Nkumba, face Tanzania Prisons in their final group game. However, the match offers no chance for Ndejje to qualify for the semifinals.
KCB Nkumba’s strong performance has positioned them as serious contenders in the tournament, with their eyes set on clinching the championship title.
