As anticipation builds for the opening of this year's Masaza Cup tournament, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called upon players, officials, and fans to uphold the values of unity, discipline, and sportsmanship while using the competition as a platform to showcase and develop football talent.

The prestigious tournament is set to kick off this Saturday at the National Teachers College grounds in Mubende, where defending champions Buweekula Ssaza will host 2008 winners Kyaddondo Ssaza in what promises to be a thrilling opening fixture.

Speaking during the official launch of the tournament at Bulange on Wednesday, Mayiga emphasized that the primary objective of the Masaza Cup extends beyond competition and the pursuit of silverware.

He noted that the tournament was established by the Kabaka of Buganda 22 years ago as a unifying platform for the youth and the people of Buganda, while simultaneously nurturing sporting talent.

The Katikkiro expressed that his greatest satisfaction comes when the tournament concludes peacefully, with all participating teams, officials, and supporters remaining united and unharmed.

"I am always happiest when the tournament ends with all the 18 participating teams, officials, and fans intact, without violence, conflict, or disorder. What matters most is that the competition strengthens love, unity, and mutual respect among our people, because these are the values championed by the Kabaka," Mayiga said.

He further urged players to embrace discipline both on and off the pitch and to view the competition as an opportunity to market their abilities to football scouts, clubs, and other stakeholders within the sport.

"His Majesty the Kabaka established this prestigious tournament to unite the youth and the people of Buganda. Talent development must remain a key priority, alongside discipline and fair play. Let football be the ultimate winner, and may the best team emerge victorious," he added.

Beyond football matters, Mayiga used the occasion to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, cautioning sportsmen and women against complacency regarding the disease. He stressed that despite advancements in treatment and prevention, HIV remains a significant public health concern and urged athletes to take responsibility for their health by observing recommended preventive measures.

"The virus remains among us and can affect anyone. Athletes must take care of themselves and make responsible choices. A successful sportsman or sportswoman is one who remains healthy and free from preventable diseases," he noted.

His message was echoed by Daniel Kayongo, Head of Marketing at Kansai Plascon Uganda, one of the tournament's principal sponsors. Kayongo said the company continues to support the Masaza Cup because of its proven contribution to grassroots football development and talent identification across Uganda.

"Plascon is proud to continue standing with the Buganda Kingdom in supporting the Masaza Cup. Over the years, the tournament has grown into one of Uganda's most important platforms for grassroots football development and talent nurturing. We believe in empowering young people and providing them with opportunities to realize their potential through sport," Kayongo said.

The 2025 Masaza Cup is expected to attract thousands of football enthusiasts from across Buganda and beyond, with participating teams competing not only for the championship but also for the opportunity to showcase emerging talent on a wider stage.

In addition to Kansai Plascon Uganda, other sponsors supporting this year's tournament include Vision Group, Airtel Uganda, and Centenary Bank.
