Over 200 veteran sportsmen and women are competing in this year’s Kampala Veterans Tournament, a week-long celebration of athleticism, camaraderie, and healthy living.

The annual event kicked off on Monday at Kampala Club and will run until Saturday, August 30.

Open to club members aged between 50 and 80, the tournament offers a vibrant platform for seasoned athletes to relive their sporting glory and showcase the skills they honed in their youth.

Participants will compete across a wide range of disciplines including lawn tennis, badminton, squash, walking, scrabble, swimming, darts, chess, and mweso—all hosted within the club’s fully equipped facilities in Nakasero.

Simon Mugabi, chairman of the organizing sports committee, emphasized the tournament’s broader purpose beyond competition. “Apart from expressing talent, the tournament is meant to promote health, encourage interaction, and keep people connected. Seeing elderly people play also reflects a sportsman’s attitude and character, which inspires the youth,” he said.

Among the notable participants is Uganda’s Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, who is expected to feature in the lawn tennis championship, adding a touch of prestige to the event.

The Kampala Veterans Tournament was first held in 1996 and has since grown into a cherished tradition. According to club chairman David Kamukama, the event continues to uphold its founding spirit—celebrating resilience, community, and the enduring power of sport.

Winners will be awarded trophies and medals in recognition of their performance and dedication. The tournament is proudly supported by Centenary Bank and Old Mutual, with New Vision serving as one of the solidarity sponsors.

As the games unfold, Kampala Club remains a hub of energy and nostalgia, where age is no barrier and the love for sport continues to thrive.
