Kampala University Netball Club has departed for Kigali, Rwanda, ahead of the Genocide Memorial Netball Tournament scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

The Ugandan side, making its debut appearance at the annual competition, comprises 12 players and will be captained by center player Gloria Aya under the guidance of coach Jessie Asiimwe.

The team was officially flagged off during a ceremony held at Kampala University's main campus in Ggaba. Speaking at the event, Kampala University Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Muhammed Faquih Kateregga, applauded the team for earning the opportunity to represent both the institution and Uganda on the regional stage.

Kateregga emphasized that the tournament goes beyond competition, noting that it serves as a platform for promoting unity, friendship, and remembrance of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

“We are delighted to have been invited to Rwanda to participate in this tournament for the first time. This competition is not only for Rwandans but also serves as a bridge that strengthens the relationship between Ugandans and Rwandans,” Kateregga said.

“We want to see our students excel in both sports and education. Such opportunities are important because they allow them to build connections and interact with people from different backgrounds and spheres of life,” he added.

Head coach Jessie Asiimwe expressed confidence in His team's preparedness, revealing that the players have undergone three weeks of intensive training ahead of the tournament.

“We have had a productive training period and the players are ready for the challenge ahead. We are grateful for the invitation and eager to display our abilities. Our target is to return home with the trophy,” Asiimwe said.

Team captain Gloria Aya echoed her coach's optimism, citing teamwork as the side's greatest strength.

“We have trained well and everyone is focused on the task ahead. Our strength lies in playing as a team rather than relying on individual brilliance. We are confident and determined to perform well,” Aya stated.

The Genocide Memorial Netball Tournament attracts teams from across the region and is organized as part of efforts to promote remembrance, reconciliation, and unity through sport.
