The inaugural Kabaka Coronation Badminton Tournament, held from August 8–10 at Lugogo Indoor Arena, was hailed a resounding success by Uganda Badminton Federation (UBF) CEO Simon Mugabi.
The event coincided with the 32nd coronation anniversary of Buganda King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, adding cultural significance to the sporting spectacle.
The tournament attracted 411 players with 450 entries, resulting in 526 matches across various categories. Participants competed in boys’ and girls’ junior divisions (ages 13–19), seniors (30–50), professionals, and veterans above 50, in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles formats.
Buganda’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Robert Sserwanga, announced that badminton has officially been added to the Kingdom’s sports calendar.

He confirmed the launch of two new school tournaments, the Kabaka Cup for boys and the Nabagereka Cup for girls, set to begin in March next year.
“We are impressed by UBF’s efforts and the Kabaka Cup initiative. The coronation tournament will now be part of the annual festivities around July 31,” said Minister Sserwanga.
He praised the tournament’s international appeal, which drew players from India, Pakistan, Kenya, Zambia, and Uganda, and emphasized the Kabaka’s commitment to nurturing young talent for global representation.
UBF President Annet Nakamya commended the Buganda Kingdom for its support in promoting youth talent and welcomed the new competitions as a major boost for the sport.
Ndejje University sports officer Ivan Karimunda also lauded the tournament’s inclusivity, noting that it brought together players from under-10 to over-60, with coaches showcasing their skills alongside athletes.
The event concluded with a vibrant 19th-hole experience themed around Soul and R&B, where participants donned cowboy attire. Comedian Patrick ‘Salvado’ Idringi entertained guests, while attendees enjoyed cocktails and special offers on Johnnie Walker spirits.
In a gesture of corporate social responsibility, I&M Bank CEO Robin Bairstow pledged sh20 million towards the education of caddies and children of maintenance staff, reinforcing the tournament’s broader impact beyond sport.
