Isaac Zebra Ssenyange Jr. headlined the Kampala Fight Night with a commanding unanimous decision victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Serge Djamba, under the floodlights of the newly constructed Hamz Stadium.
This event marked the full return of boxing to the iconic venue, now transformed into a state-of-the-art multi-sports stadium.
Ssenyange Jr. was making his comeback after a year-long hiatus from professional boxing. Remarkably, his last bout was on June 1, 2024, during the official opening of Hamz Stadium, where he defeated Abaasi Seguya to claim the national super welterweight title.
His latest triumph over Djamba sets the tone for what is now planned to be a monthly boxing showcase under the banner of Kampala Fight Nights, organized by Zebra Mando Promotions in partnership with Hamz Stadium management.
Boxing and Nakivubo have long been intertwined. The original stadium hosted boxing events dating back to the 1970s until its demolition in 2017 to make way for the modern Hamz Stadium. The Kampala Boxing Club (KBC), based at the venue, has produced world-class talent including Ayub Kalule, John "The Beast" Mugabi, and Cornelius Boza-Edwards, along with numerous continental champions.
With boxing now joining a growing lineup of sports hosted at Hamz Stadium, the initiative aims to nurture and elevate Ugandan athletic talent.
For Ssenyange Jr whose win over Djamba headlined week one in the wee hours of Sunday morning, he is overwhelmed with this development.
"First of all I thank my fans who came in to cheer me. My opponent was good but I was a better than him," he said.
"I'm so excited that we have entered into an MOU with Hajji Hamis Kiggunddu and Hamz Stadium management to host boxing here monthly. It is a good gesture that I think will promote Ugandan Boxing to the top."
Other day's thrillers included lightweight Shakur Mugambe Unanimously defeated Khalid Mugerwa just like Ivan Kambagire just like over DR Congo's Augustin Mugunge.
‘Mad Dog’ Paul Raskara fresh from retiring from the national boxing team, The Bombers knocked out DR Congo's Denis Kimambi in the second round with Henry Oteba defeating Masjid Kabonge by unanimous decision.
