The future of hockey in Uganda is getting brighter by the day.

The only team sport that has ever represented Uganda at the Olympics is hoping to remake history by qualifying for the 2024 Paris games.

The Hockey Cranes took part in the 1972 summer Olympics and finished 15th.

Phillip Wafula, the chairperson of the Uganda Hockey Association said they have what it takes to return to the Olympic Games.

“We are making all the necessary preparations to see that we send our teams (men and women senior teams) back to the Olympic Games, and retain our record that was set in the 1972 games when our men’s team did go and make the nation proud,” Wafula said in an interview as he highlighted the achievements of the association in 2022 and challenges they still face.

The association in January took part in the hockey African Cup of Nations in Accra, Ghana where the men’s team finished sixth while the ladies finished eighth overall.

The team was resurfacing at the tourney after twenty-one years.
