As the rugby championship kicks off on Saturday, February 7, Platinum Heathens Rugby Club has received a major boost with a Shs350 million sponsorship from finance company Platinum Credit Uganda Limited.

Founded in 1999, Heathens enjoyed a strong 2025 season, finishing second in the Uganda Cup, second in the National 7s, and fourth in the league. Improving on that record is now top of the agenda for the Kyadondo Rugby Club side.

Club chairman Desire Mugumisa announced the renewed partnership during a media briefing on Friday. “We are excited and humbled to receive Shs350m from our partner. It has not only given us more confidence but also motivated us to aim for more wins this season,” Mugumisa said.

He added that the funding will focus on player welfare, including salaries and health, as well as new kits, youth development programs, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities to ensure the club’s continuity.

The partnership between Heathens and Platinum Credit began in 2020 with a sponsorship of Shs20m, which grew to Shs330m in 2023 before being increased to Shs350m this year.

Albert Abaasa, managing director of Platinum Credit Uganda, attributed the increment to Heathens’ consistency and achievements. “We are overwhelmed by the engagement and accomplishments that exceeded our expectations. You have given us exposure and created a space where our people can interact,” Abaasa said.

Kyadondo Rugby Club chairman Ian Walker praised Platinum Credit for its consistent support and pledged to put the sponsorship to good use. He also urged other corporate brands to emulate Platinum by investing in rugby, particularly in age-grade development and player welfare.

Since its inception in 1999, Heathens has consistently prioritized the welfare of its players, a commitment that continues to define the club’s ethos.
