Platinum Heathens Rugby Club suffered their first home defeat of the season, just a week after showing their strength by defeating the 2025 league champions Pirates at Kyadondo Grounds.

Heathens fell 12-7 to Toyota Buffaloes, a team they once groomed through the ranks, in a match played under slippery conditions following a heavy downpour.

Heathens excited their fans in the 5th minute when Aaron Wanyoto crossed for a try that was successfully converted by Malcolm Okello to give the hosts an early 7-0 lead.

However, Buffaloes responded in the 24th minute through a try by Aaron Tukei, which was converted by Hassin Wasswa to level the scores. Daniel Otim then added another try in the 49th minute to give the visitors a 12-7 lead heading into the second half.

Both teams failed to add more points in the second half as tight defensive play and the slippery conditions made handling difficult.

Heathens also suffered a major setback with injuries in the first half. Backline player Mathew Musasizi was forced off the pitch on crutches, while Aaron Ofwoywroth sustained a shoulder injury.

Heathens captain Norbert Okeny admitted the defeat but remained optimistic ahead of their next game against Victoria Sharks.

“We played well, but it was unfortunate to lose our second game of the season and the first at home,” said Okeny.

Buffaloes senior player Hector Twinomugisha credited the victory to proper preparation.

“It is a great achievement to beat one of the giants. We prepared well for the game, and we cannot blame the weather because we all played on the same slippery ground,” said Twinomugisha.

In other matches played, defending champions Pirates defeated Plascon Mongers 61-23 at Kings Park. Rhinos and Hippos also won their home games, beating Walukuba 19-17 and Warriors 20-7, respectively.

KCB Kobs secured an away victory after beating Impis 34-24 at Makerere.

In the women’s league, defending champions Black Panthers suffered their second consecutive loss after falling 25-17 to Nile Rapids away. Ewes defeated Panthers 29-20 at home, while Thunderbirds overcame Avengers 10-5 away.
