Uganda kicked off the 2025 East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games in style, easing to a 4–1 victory over Burundi in an entertaining opener under the floodlights at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
Impact substitute Denis Ssekabira lit up the evening, stepping off the bench to score a sensational hat trick. John Lematia added Uganda’s fourth, while Shabani Nimubona provided Burundi’s lone response.

The match capped a vibrant day in Kampala. Earlier on Saturday, the Games were officially launched as the capital burst into colour and celebration, marking the start of two weeks dedicated to sporting diplomacy and regional cohesion.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa presided over a colourful ceremony, followed by a spirited march from Parliament to Kololo, with legislators from across the region walking side by side in a show of solidarity and competitive enthusiasm.

The Inter-Parliamentary Games once again highlight the EAC’s commitment to integration beyond political engagement.
Over the next 14 days, lawmakers will compete in football, netball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, golf, darts, tug of war and other events, effectively turning Kampala into the centre of East African sports diplomacy.
Uganda, as hosts, welcomed delegations from Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan, with each country fielding teams keen to showcase both sporting skill and regional camaraderie.
