Basketball governing body FUBA president Nasser Sserunjogi has vowed to take the Gazelles a notch higher.

Despite all the challenges, Sserunjogi is confident that Uganda’s success in basketball is in the Gazelles.

“I want to assure you that our strategy and focus have changed to girls’ basketball because we know that it is where we can make noise on the continent. We are ready to do everything possible within our means to support girls' basketball in this country,” Sserunjogi said.

This comes after the Gazelles displayed a historic performance at the just concluded AfroBasket in Kigali.

He made the remarks during a press conference that was held at Hotel Africana on Tuesday when FUBA was welcoming the gazelles from the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

“We have decided to try as much as possible to reach out to corporates, it is tough and challenging because the more we continue playing from away it becomes hard for the corporate world to come on board but we are going to fight hard to see how we move a step further.”

He has rallied the government to take over national teams much as the federation can reach out to the corporate world for support.

“All we ask is better funding and facilities. We shall be happy even when we do not have the dinner, we shall compete at all levels and we can grow the game.”

Now that the Gazelles managed to finish seventh, Sserunjogi says the next target is to make it to the top four and perhaps make it to the final

“We need to finish in the top four because it comes with benefits like an automatic qualification to the AfroBasket and that means we do not need to go through the qualifiers because in the process anything can happen, we do not have a guarantee that you can proceed to another level.”

“It also acts as the qualifier for the next Olympics, as well as other continental events like commonwealth, All Africa Games, now we have the target of finishing in the top four in 2025,” said Sserunjogi.

He also commended the technical team and players for raising the Ugandan flag high at the AfroBasket.
