Football is proving to be more than just a game in western Uganda, with the 2026 Ankole Cup taking shape as a platform for unity, talent development, and regional identity.

The tournament, set to run between June and August during the domestic off-season, will bring together 13 district teams in a competition expected to attract wide attention across the region.

Local Organising Committee chairperson Osborne Mushabe said the tournament goes beyond football.

"We are not just organising a tournament; we are building a movement that brings people together. Our preparations are on course, and we are confident this year's edition will set a new benchmark," he said.

The tournament is also seen as a key platform for developing local talent. Organisers have maintained a rule that each district registers 25 players, with at least 20 being natives, while five slots are reserved for players competing at higher levels.

"This structure ensures we maintain our identity while still raising the level of competition. It is about giving homegrown talent a stage while blending in experience," Mushabe explained.

At a media briefing in Kampala, organisers and leaders discussed the growing importance of the tournament in promoting unity and community engagement.

Leaders from across the Ankole sub-region described the competition as a strong force bringing people together despite differences.

Mwine Mpaka, the Member of Parliament for Mbarara City South, said the tournament has changed how people view sports in the region.

"The Ankole Cup has changed how people perceive sports in our region. It has created excitement, inspired young players, and brought leaders and communities onto one platform," he said.

Beyond competition, the Ankole Cup continues to grow into a breeding ground for future football stars while strengthening social bonds within communities.

"Football has a special way of uniting people regardless of background. Through this tournament, we are strengthening bonds and giving young people an opportunity to dream," Mpaka added.

The tournament will officially be launched on May 19 in Kampala before matches kick off on June 6 at Bushenyi Main Stadium.

The opening day will feature football and entertainment, including a schools' rivalry match and a novelty game between Members of Parliament and the media, before hosts Bushenyi face Sheema in the main match.

The competition will feature 43 matches and will conclude with the final on August 16 at Kabwohe Stadium.
