The Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) has increased the National Rally Championship (NRC) calendar from seven to eight rounds for the 2026 season.
The decision was announced during a rally symposium at Kati-Kati Restaurant in Lugogo.
FMU explained that the change is meant to spread rallying across all eight regions of Uganda—Acholi, Bunyoro, Central, Teso, Eastern, Western, Southern, and Rwenzori. Although there will be eight events, only a driver’s best seven results will count toward the overall standings.
Many drivers, however, expressed concern about the added costs of fuel, logistics, and accommodation. They argued that despite FMU receiving government funding, little direct support reaches competitors.
After lengthy discussions, FMU agreed to provide relief measures. Each driver will receive at least 100 litres of fuel per event, reimbursement of registration fees, and accommodation support for rallies outside their home regions.
The federation also promised to stage an annual sprint event, with proceeds going to the drivers’ SACCO, and introduced a 24-hour insurance policy covering accidents during rallies, training, and daily life.
FMU General Secretary Reynolds Kibira said the expanded calendar is also necessary to meet requirements of the 2023 Sports Act, which demands federations establish leadership in at least 75 percent of districts. Failure to comply could lead to deregistration.
FMU official Moses Seguya outlined new safety measures, including stricter scrutineering, better equipment standards, and improved stage management.
The 2026 NRC season will begin with the Mbale City Rally on March 27–28.
