KAMPALA - It was far from a vintage performance, but for Arsenal supporters in Uganda, relief ultimately outweighed frustration as Eberechi Eze’s early goal secured a narrow victory for Arsenal in what many described as a tense and underwhelming display.

The match, watched closely by a lively Ugandan fanbase, unfolded like a rollercoaster, moments of promise overshadowed by missed chances and a lingering inability to put the game beyond doubt. Despite dominating phases of play, Arsenal’s lack of clinical finishing kept nerves on edge until the final whistle.

Adding to the intensity was the presence of the popular fan media channel AFTV, whose cameras captured every reaction during their Ugandan tour. For some fans, the constant spotlight blurred the line between genuine emotion and performative passion, as supporters reacted dramatically to every missed opportunity and misplaced pass.

The tour, organised by Ugandan Arsenal faithful David Mafabi and Barbara Nabirye, attracted high-profile guests, including Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda, Ababu Namwamba, and musician Ykee Benda.

Yet even with the celebratory atmosphere, frustration was hard to ignore. Arsenal’s failure to capitalize on multiple chances left fans visibly agitated, a sentiment echoed both in the stands and across social media. The tension was perhaps best captured by local fan Kasumba, who summed up the day with a resigned but familiar phrase: “A win is a win.”

His relief was telling. In the world of football banter, especially among Arsenal supporters, narrow escapes often invite as much scrutiny as praise. Avoiding post-match ridicule, at least for now, seemed victory enough.

Beyond the result, the occasion underscored football’s unifying power. Whether in London or Kampala, the emotional rhythms remain the same,  hope, anxiety, frustration, and joy, all compressed into 90 minutes.

Still, for some fans, celebrations remain cautious. As one supporter put it, the real party will have to wait: trophies, not tight wins, are the true measure of success.
