Ethiopian club Bahir Dar Kenema recovered from a disastrous first 10 minutes to pip Azam of Tanzania 4-3 on penalties and book a CAF Confederation Cup last-32 place on Friday.

Leading 2-1 after the first leg of a preliminary tie last weekend, Kenema conceded in the first minute of the return match in Dar es Salaam and again after 10 minutes.

Iddy Nado scored the first Azam goal and Zimbabwean Prince Dube the second to put the home side ahead on aggregate.

Kenema recovered from the early blows to halve the deficit on the night and level the aggregate score when Habtamu Zewede netted on 18 minutes.

There were no further goals in a lively east African showdown and Kenema converted four of their six penalties in the shootout to secure a last-32 clash with Club Africain of Tunisia.

Club Africain will be formidable opponents for Kenema having won the CAF Champions League and been Confederation Cup runners-up.

On Thursday, Arta Solar became the first Djibouti club to win a tie in the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League when they beat Horseed of Somalia 3-0 for a 6-0 aggregate victory.

Ghanaian Gabriel Dadzie scored twice for Arta and Ayman Hussien conceded an own goal in a match staged in Tanzania because Somalia has witnessed decades of civil war and Islamist insurgency.
