East Africa Club Netball Championships
KCCA 81 JKU 29
Prisons 44 NIC 49
KCCA and NIC secured the top spot at the East Africa Club Netball Championships with an 81-29 and 44-49 victory over JKU and Prisons respectively on Thursday at the Kamwokya Sports Grounds.
KCCA played JKU knowing a poor performance would throw them at the wrong end of the results between Prisons and NIC.
Prisons and NIC played a very tight match that was decided by a few errors giving NIC the hard-fought victory.
The match was enthralling with Jesca Achan and NIC centre Maggie Bagala duelling in a high octane match that saw the two teams put up a show for the ages.
Prisons took an early 12-11 lead in the first quarter but NIC fought back to take the second set 22-24.
The third set was the most demanding and NIC won that one 37-33. The two sides put up a show for the early morning crowd that came to Kamwokya and importantly they made every ball count.
They played with gusto showing off the best of what the Ugandan teams had to offer. It was a match that demanded the best and both teams lined up their best players.
Prisons coach Imelda Nyongesa was bemused by officiating.
“The game in the first quarter and second quarter was a nice game but in the third quarter the other side’s shooter was opening her elbows and they were not calling those but he was calling them on our side,” Nyongesa explained.
NIC coach Vincent Kiwanuka appreciated the quality of the players on both sides but was very impressed with the problem-solving in his team.
“My Players hurried to read the match against Prisons and they were able to adjust accordingly to their challenge. Everyone found a solution to the problems they were experiencing,” NIC head coach Vincent Kiwanuka said.
