WBO Africa Super Lightweight Title

F. Abubakari (GHA) v L. Muwonge (UGA)

Lords’ Wembley Arena, Accra

Saturday, March 2, 2024. Super Sport 7.

From being a gospel preacher from the Ghettos of Zana to vying to become one of Uganda’s most decorated boxers at the moment.

It is a story that awaits reigning Africa Boxing Union (ABU) Super lightweight champion, ‘Dancing Master’ Latibu Muwonge.

Muwonge takes on Ghana’s Faisal Abubakari ‘Poncho Power’ in a blockbuster World Boxing Organization (WBO) Africa Super lightweight title fight this Saturday, March 2nd, 2024.

Their fight will be live on Super Sport 7 straight from the Lord’s Wembley Arena, Sukura in Accra.

It is a must win for Muwonge, a former national boxing team pugilist if he is to follow in the footsteps of Uganda boxing legends that made their name from Entebbe Road.

These include the legendary John ‘The Beast’ Mugabi, Ayub Kalule, Abdul Tebazaalwa who were born in Nsambya, Ndejje, Katwe respectively among others.

“This Ghanaian is going to know why I was nicknamed dancing master and why some compare my fighting style to one of boxing legend Muhammad Ali (rip) and former movie actor Bruce Lee (rip)” Muwonge told Vision sport before his flight.

Adding that;

“Trust me Accra is going to bow down to me. I’m going to hit him the hardest way. I can’t let myself lose this belt because it means a lot to me.”

If Muwonge goes ahead and wins this belt, he will replicate Ugandans who have recently won Africa titles away from home in West Africa.

These include John Sserunjogi who in December last year won the WBA Africa middleweight title in Guinea and Edward ‘Messiah’ Kakembo in 2016 in Nigeria.

“Basing on the type of training I have had in the last three months, I’m confident I can reach the heights of Sserunjogi and Kakembo’s successes in West Africa”

In Accra Muwonge traveled with his coach Abu Mukiibi who sounds confident that nothing can stop them from returning home with the WBO title.

“We have been watching Faisal’s clips and we have a plan on how to defeat him. My fighter is fit enough only waiting for the D-day.”

Muwonge who is now a born again turned believer at former Kampala Boxing Club's boxer, Daudi Kyambadde's  Rezlife Church in Zana comes into this fight with a 8-0 ring record.

The current WBC Africa super lightweight seed one has won all his eight pro fights losing and drawing none on the turn.

But in Abubakari, Muwonge faces a toughest opponent of his boxing career who has won all his 15 pro fights with an astonishing 13 knockouts.
