Cricket player Consy Aweko believes in exploring all the possible avenues to make it as an athlete hence the reason she ventured into hockey and helped her side clinch the National Hockey League title.

Aweko is a prolific cricket player with Aziz Damani who are one of the stronger sides in the cricket division but went ahead to join Deliverance Church of Uganda (DCU) Hockey Club who have proved a statement this season by winning the league title.

They are vying for a double by going after the Hockey Uganda Cup where they face Weatherhead Gazelles.

“Taking part in more than one sports discipline gives you the opportunity to explore your talents. When it reaches the point of specialising, it gives you the chance to choose the sport in which you are more talented,” Aweko stated.

Aweko’s love for the sport grew in secondary school where she tried out the hockey stick after finding the cricket bat so interesting to handle.

She is an all-around cricketer who believes her career pathway as an athlete is greatly based on discipline and determination.

“It has always been discipline that has enabled me to become the athlete that everyone is seeing and being focused and hardworking,” she said.

The Victoria Pearls captain noted how challenging the idea of mastering the different game rules is.

“Cricket has got totally different rules of the game and so does hockey. But the bigger picture is being able to incorporate both rules and knowing when to execute each,” Aweko stated.

DCU were not favourites to win the league at the start of the season as Wananchi women team  hogged the limelight but the underdogs have changed that.

The spinner also noted the challenge of matches clashing which leaves her torn as to what choice to make.

“Clashing timetables for game days sometimes leave me at a crossroads since the games are on the  same day and might even clash at times in the duration,” she added.
