The redevelopment of Lugogo Sports Complex scheduled to start this month will not kick off after the court issued an injunction barring the Turkish contractor Summa from conducting any activity on the land on which the facility sits.

The High Court in Kampala stopped the redevelopment following an application filed by the Uganda Sports Union (USU) saying the land belongs to them and not the National Council of Sports (NCS).

Summa was awarded the project to redevelop the facility to world-class standards. The dilapidated Stadium will according to what President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni be erased and replaced by a modern facility.

“The whole project has taled but I am confident that the contractor will get going once the injunction is lifted," said Bernard Ogwel, NCS General Secretary.

Hesitant to get into the details about the injunction, Ogwel said the redevelopment would contribute a lot to revenue collection for the government.

"Once the facility is complete, hosting international sports events will enable the government collect revenue from the parties that will be using the facility at a given time," Ogwel said.

Efforts to get a comment from USU officials were futile as their known contacts were unavailable.

However, the State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang called for patriotism from the parties that sought the injunction on the redevelopment.

"I call upon all the stakeholders of sports to fight alongside me in seeing that we have the redevelopment start as early as yesterday for more sports success in the future," he said.

The redevelopment of the facility is estimated to cost sh790b. It will consist of an indoor arena, mini arena, swimming pool, two hostels, hockey pitch, and NCS offices.
