Christmas arrived early for Arrows FC players and their coaching staff after the team walked away with a 50-million-shillings cash prize and a bull for winning the 2025 Hamz Cup.

Debuntants Arrows edged Kafumbe One 1-0 in a closely contested final played on Friday under floodlights at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo in Uganda's capital Kampala.

The final contest was evenly poised, with both teams showing tactical discipline and resilience, but Arrows’ solitary strike proved decisive.

For clarity, Kafumbe, sponsored by manager Bruno Kayongo, fielded two teams at this edition: Kafumbe One, who reached the final and finished second, and Kafumbe Two, who went on to secure third place.

The celebrations extended beyond the champions, as all four semifinalists left the tournament with handsome rewards. Besides the 50 million shillings top prize, runners-up Kafumbe One received 25 million shillings.

In the third-place playoff, Kafumbe Two, defeated Pentagon FC 1-0 to bag 15 million shillings while fourth-placed Pentagon took home 10 million shillings.

Individual excellence was also recognised, as follows:

▪️Kafumbe One’s Michael Kayongo was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and received one million shillings plus an accolade.

▪️Pentagon’s Bashir Ssenyonga was crowned best goalkeeper. He received an accolade and 500,000 shillings.

▪️Pentagon coach Felix Ssekabuuza was named best coach and walked away with an accolade and 500,000 shillings.

▪️ Top scorer Sulaiman Ssentogo was also honoured. He bagged the Golden Boot and 500,000 shillings.

▪️The Fair Play award went to Jesco FC, who received 500,000 shillings.

▪️Boda Boda Union FC were rewarded with one million shillings after being named the team with the most fans throughout the tournament.

'We are one family'

In a rare gesture that added to the festive mood, all teams and individual award winners received their prize money in cash at Hamz Stadium immediately after the tournament.

In addition to cash rewards, Arrows were presented with a trophy and gold medals, as Kafumbe One and Kafumbe Two received silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Arrows manager and sponsor Dan Kingston expressed his gratitude to tournament sponsor Hamis Kiggundu for organising a competition that brings together traders from Kampala’s arcades, boda boda stages and taxi parks.

“On behalf of my team, I am very happy to reach the final and win it. This is our first time participating, and to emerge champions is very exciting. I sponsored the team alone because we had no sponsors, but the money we have won today will be shared among us because we are one family,” said Kingston.

Meanwhile, MTN MoMo’s Samuel Osapa, whose company was one of the tournament sponsors and donated the bull to the champions, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ugandan football.

“We are Uganda’s number one football supporter, and we promise to continue. We are delighted to be part of the Hamz Cup, especially since many of the participants are traders who use our services in their businesses,” said Osapa.

The 2025 Hamz Cup was the second edition of the tournament and attracted 40 teams, more than doubling the 16 that featured in the inaugural edition.

Overall, 100 million shillings in prize money was injected into the competition by the main sponsor, Kiggundu, underscoring his love for football and giving back to the traders.
