Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) president Emmanuel Mwaka has named 28 players to compete in the 2023 Super 14 National Chess Championship, the last edition of the National Grand Prix.
The winner in the tournament will be crowned chess champion for 2023 in both the men and women categories.
Both the men and women's teams have 14 players, and 12 were selected from the previous five grand prix held last year. One junior player and another were given a wild card to compete for the top- notch position of the year.
The Super 14 starts on February 11 in Ntinda, according to Mwaka.
The five winners in the men and women will represent the country in the 2024 Olympiad in September in Budapest, Hungary.
The 14 selected players in the men's team are Mark Nyola, Richard Kato, FM Harlod Wanyama, IM Arthur Ssegwanyi, IM Elijah Emong, Norman Mageno, Rajab Kamoga, FM Patrick Kawuma, FM Haruna Nsubuga, Shakur Wagodo, CM Emmanuel Egesa, FM Bob Bibasa and CM Emmanuel Musasizi.
The women competitors are Valentine Nassanga, Sarah Nakalyowa, WFM Ivy Amoko, Peninah Nakabo, Sana Omprakash, Caroline Nabirye, WCM Shakira Ampaire, WFM Gloria Nansubuga, Milly Takali, Zuri Tatiina, Mary Kevin Ndagire, WCM Maria Nakanyike and Safina Mugide.
The winner in the men's category will walk away with a land title, a new move to empower the players.
