After briefly returning to the country from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Uganda’s Olympic medallists Joshua Cheptegei, PeruthChemutai and Jacob Kiplimo get straight back to action when they compete in the Eugene Diamond League in the US, August 21.
Tokyo 2020 medalists Cheptegei (gold), Mohamed Ahmed (silver) and Paul Chelimo (bronze) will highlight a loaded men's two-mile race at the Prefontaine Classic Hayward Field in Oregon, in what is a re-match of the 5000m race in Tokyo.
In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Tokyo Olympics golden girl, Peruth Chemutai will also take on World Champion Beatrice Chepkoech who finished 7th in Japan, Olympic silver medallist Courtney Frerichs (USA), and World leader Norah Tanui, among other contestants.
Other Ugandan Olympians Halima Nakaayi and Winnie Nanyondo also flew out on Monday night for the prize money championship that has attracted dozens of Tokyo Olympics medallists.
World 800m Champion Nakaayi, will also be back and up against Olympic gold medallist Athing Mu (USA) and silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson (Great Britain).
Nanyondo will battle two-time Olympic Champion Faith Kipyegon (Kenya) and Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir (Great Britain) among a strong field of world-class runners.
The top 8 for 100m, 100/110m Hurdles, and 800m, the top 7 for the 200m, 400m, and 400m Hurdles, the top 6 for all technical events and top 10 Athletes for 1500m and long-distance, qualify for the final.
The winner in each discipline at the final is awarded a Diamond League Trophy and $30,000 (sh106m) in prize money.
The Diamond League encompasses 32 Diamond Disciplines, following a championship style model. Athletes earn points at the 13 series meetings to qualify for the final of their discipline.
