Uganda’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania from August 2 to 30, has clarified that all tickets for matches hosted at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, will only be available online.
This includes all Group C matches, one quarterfinal, a semifinal, and the third-place playoff match scheduled to be held at Namboole.
Addressing the media at the Uganda Media Centre ON Wednesday, Dennis Mugimba, the chairperson of the communications and signage sub-committee, emphasized that CAF did not provide for the sale of physical tickets. This clarification followed public outcry from Ugandans who were expecting to purchase tickets at designated physical outlets.
“CAF is the one managing the entire ticket arrangement, and they have not provided an option for selling physical tickets. All ticket sales are digital as of today,” explained Mugimba.
“CAF has provided two options for purchasing the match tickets. First, you either go on the CAF website and open the link found there or by scanning a bar code still on that website to purchase the tickets. Still on the CAF website. Also, when you have opened the website, you will find the option to book your ticket for matches either in Tanzania, Kenya or Uganda,” he added.
Mugimba also cautioned the public against falling prey to fraudsters claiming to sell CHAN tickets, urging fans to only purchase through the official CAF channels.
Ticket prices for the Ugandan-hosted matches are sh10,000 for ordinary, sh30,000 for VIP, and sh50,000 for VVIP, with each ticket allowing access to two matches on the same matchday. However, fans are advised that once a ticket is scanned at the stadium gate, re-entry is not permitted. If one leaves the stadium after the first match, a new ticket will be required to return for the second.
Despite the tournament kicking off in less than a week, publicity efforts remain minimal. Many Ugandans, especially those outside the Kampala metropolitan area, are still unaware of the tournament’s presence in the country. This issue was raised in Parliament on Tuesday, with Speaker Anita Among tasking Minister of Sports Peter Ogwang who also sits on the LOC to explain the low levels of public awareness for such a high-profile continental event.
In response to concerns over poor publicity, Mugimba disclosed that through the LOC, sh1b has been allocated to FUFA to boost marketing efforts across various media platforms.
“The LOC has taken steps to amplify awareness beyond billboards by providing FUFA with sh1b to support tournament promotions through TV, radio, digital media, social media influencers, and community public address systems (‘bizindalo’) to rally Ugandans to attend matches at Namboole,” he said.
Group C action begins on Monday at Namboole with Guinea facing Niger at 5pm, followed by Uganda’s clash against Algeria at 8pm under the floodlights.
