Busoga Masaza Cycling Championship returns with thrilling third edition

Sponsored by MTN Uganda, the annual event promises five days of intense competition, culminating in a grand finale on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in Jinja City.

The third edition of the MTN Busoga Masaza Cycling Championship is set for an action-packed start as qualifiers across the 11 counties of Busoga Kingdom kick off this Saturday, December 20, 2025.

 

Sponsored by MTN Uganda, the annual event promises five days of intense competition, culminating in a grand finale on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in Jinja City.

 

On Thursday, December 18, Owek. Amin Bbosa Nkono, Minister of Sports in Obwa Kyabazinga Bwa Busoga, unveiled the detailed schedule for the preliminary rounds. The qualifiers will feature races in two categories: Tippa (Gaali ensoga) and Mountain Sports Bikes, each covering a uniform distance of 50km. All races will begin at 9:00 am.

 

Bbosa explained that the top three finishers in each category from every chiefdom will advance, producing six representatives per chiefdom for the grand finale. He was accompanied by his deputy, Minister Daniel Musota, as he outlined the schedule.

 

Preliminary races will be held in Buhna and Bunhole Bunanhumba chiefdoms on December 20, in Kigulu and Bukooli on December 21, in Luuka and Bulamogi on December 22, in Butembe and Bugabula on December 23, and in Bukono, Busiki, and Bugweri on December 24.

 

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top five finishers in each category during the qualifiers, with the winners receiving sh100,000, runners-up sh80,000, third place sh60,000, fourth place sh40,000, and fifth place sh20,000.

 

The grand finale will feature even bigger rewards. The winner in each category will take home a brand-new motorcycle, while second place will earn sh2 million, third place sh1 million, fourth place sh500,000, and fifth place sh300,000. Every finisher outside the top five will receive sh50,000 as a consolation prize. Details of the finale’s course and distance will be announced later.

 

Defending champions Luganda Tiffu from Bukooli (Tippa category) and Odoto John from Kigulu (Mountain Sports Bike category) are expected to face stiff competition as they bid to retain their crowns.

 

The championship continues to grow in popularity, showcasing the talent, endurance, and community spirit of cyclists from across Busoga Kingdom while promoting fitness and healthy living.
