The commissioner of physical education and sports Rev Can Duncans Mugumya has lifted the suspension he had slapped on Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Associations (USSSA) games in Bushenyi district.
The commissioner’s action follows the settlement of a misunderstanding between the Association of Secondary Schools Headteachers in Uganda (ASSHU) and the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) in Bushenyi district.
The disagreement between the officials of the said associations arose when St Kagwa petitioned the ministry over ASSHU Bushenyi's decision to ban and exclude their school team from taking part in this year’s games for using ineligible players last year, overturning USSSA Bushenyi ruling that had already punished the team by disqualifying and fining it sh500,000.
In a reconciliation meeting that was attended by national chairman ASSHU Br Augustine Mugabo, USSSA president Justus Mugisha and CEO Chris Mugisha and USSSA immediate past president Patrick Okanya and ASSHU, USSSA officials from Bushenyi and chaired by Commissioner Mugumya, a consensus was reached and St Kagwa allowed back in the games.
There were other decisions by the head teachers in Bushenyi to deny schools that did not do district joint mock in 2022, participation in this year’s games, which was settled before this meeting sat, and saw about 6 affected schools teams drawn in a separate pool to participate.
The games that were to start on Monday at the lower levels of competition have now been rescheduled to start on Thursday and run till Sunday in different areas of the district, where the best teams from the district level, will qualify for the Ankole region finals due next month.
The head teachers in Bushenyi district had claimed to have decided to ban St Kagwa for two years after the team had already been punished with disqualification and finning.
Truly, St Kagwa was found guilty of using Derrick Taremwa and Maxima Nuwagira, who had before enrolled at Karera Technical school for technical studies before being admitted to St Kagwa for high school.
According to a police CID police report, Taremwa was found to be a student, who continued with studies at St Kagwa and sat UACE last year while Nuwagira was later expelled for indiscipline.
The stakeholders also agreed in the meeting, that ASSHU is the administrative wing of the ministry in secondary school sports, while USSSA operates as a technical arm of the ministry in the games.
