Secondary school sports teams on Wednesday, April 9, began arriving at Duhaga Secondary School ahead of the Bunyoro Zonal Secondary Schools Sports Association competitions, set to kick off on Thursday.

Fred Kugonza, Chairperson of the Bunyoro Zone Secondary Schools Sports Association, revealed that 32 boys’ football teams and 32 girls’ football teams are expected to participate.

Kugonza noted that all teams reporting for the tournament had undergone screening to curb cases of impersonation and warned schools against recruiting non-students to compete in the games.

Kugonza added that the teams would be put into eight groups, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the round of 16 in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions. The finals are scheduled for Sunday, 13 April 2025.

Godfrey Mwesigwa, headteacher of Duhaga Secondary School—the host of the event—said they are well prepared to accommodate all schools participating in the tournament.

Barnabas Tinkasimire, Member of Parliament for Buyaga West, visited St Adolf SEED Secondary School from Kagadi at Duhaga to boost the morale of the team.

He encouraged the players to work hard during the tournament, highlighting the opportunities available abroad for those with exceptional talent.

As of 3 pm, only 12 schools had arrived at Duhaga Secondary School for the zonal competitions.

The tournament will be officially launched on Thursday, by the Bishop of Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese, Rt Rev. Jacob Ateirweho Amooti, at Duhaga Sammagie Grounds.
