The Bukwo District Local Government Council has promised to name the Kamukamba round-about in Bukwo in memory of Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei who died recently following a gender-based violence incident in her home in Kenya.
Before she was buried in Kapsiywo village, Muimet Parish in Bukwo Sub County on Saturday, Cheptegei lay in state in the district council hall where she was honoured and remembered.
Edward Kiplangat, the District Speaker Bukwo District Council Local Government said they had decided to honour the late Rebecca Cheptegei because she had been close to all the community of the district and the Sebei Region.
“The many achievements she got while a resident is the reason we decided to honour her. She has also been a gold and silver medalist at many international events.
“We are also going to name a roundabout in Kamukamba center in her memory because that is where she used to pass as she trained,” Kiplangat stated after chairing the council gathering.
The council also passed a resolution asking the government to support her children as well as asking that a road or a stadium in the country be named after her in recognition of her achievements.
They also asked the government to consider especially their athletes from Sebei during the recruitment into the armed forces. They also asked the minister of state for sport Peter Ogwang to request the Parliament of Uganda to pay special tribute to her and also asked the government and President Museveni to come good on his promise of constructing a running track at the Amanang playground.
The Sebei community is also going to raise a petition to parliament because of the current conflict between the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the community in using the forest reserve for training by the athletes. UWA recently shot dead a ten-year-old athlete whom they mistook for a poacher according to sources which has escalated the conflict.
The council also condemned Gender Based Violence which led to the circumstances in which Rebecca was killed, which they termed as barbaric, cowardly, and backward which has angered the whole community.
