Bukedea Comprehensive School’s growing dominance in junior national teams is being hailed as a sign that the institution is on course to becoming a sports powerhouse—not just in Uganda, but across East Africa and the continent.
This sentiment was echoed by George Gumisiriza, Managing Director of Anita Investments, during a celebratory sports party held in honour of the school’s recent success at the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Association (FEASSA) games in Kakamega and Kisumu, Kenya. Bukedea emerged with two gold medals in Beach Volleyball and Football, further cementing its reputation as a rising force in school sports.
“We have players on junior national teams in athletics, volleyball, football, and dance sport,” Gumisiriza said. “This proves we are on the journey to becoming a sports powerhouse, not only in Uganda but across the region and continent.”
To sustain this momentum, the school’s leadership is establishing a sports academy to retain and nurture talent beyond high school. Executive Director Anita Among, who also serves as Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, announced the initiative during the victory party held at Hotel Africana on Monday afternoon.
Responding to concerns raised by Sports Project Manager Katende Malibu about the imminent departure of senior six athletes, Among assured that no player would be leaving Bukedea. “After all this investment in facilities, you are not leaving. We are setting up an academy that is going to keep you around,” she said.
Among emphasized the importance of aiming for trophies in every discipline, noting that the school’s victories contribute to national pride and the promotion of sports in Uganda. She then handed over a cash bonus of USD 20,000 (approximately sh71.4 million) to the two winning teams, a pledge made jointly with FUFA President Moses Magogo, with each contributing USD 10,000.
“The bonus is not part of school fees,” Among clarified. “It’s simply motivation.”
Magogo praised Bukedea Comprehensive School as a future sports powerhouse, citing its strong foundation in both financial and human resources. “Bukedea is a factory of players. Money is there, ability is there. We have all the strength to stay strong, and this win is just the beginning,” he said.
The school currently offers over 200 scholarships, which have played a vital role in helping young athletes develop both their talents and academic potential. With its continued investment in sports infrastructure and talent development, Bukedea Comprehensive School is positioning itself as a beacon of excellence in youth sports across the region.
