Chris Basaliza carded a nett score of 69 to win the Empango Golf Coronation celebration tournament at Masindi Golf and Sports Club in Masindi town.

Playing off a handicap of 4, the Kinyara Golf Club member achieved three birdies during the event, which attracted 24 other participants and served to relaunch the nine-hole course that had suffered significant neglect for decades.

While the course is still a work in progress and the greens are not in the best playable condition, this did not hinder Basaliza, who finished with a gross score of 73 (nett 69).

He attributed his victory to thorough preparation.

"When they announced the Empango tournament, I began preparing every day at my home course," Basaliza explained.

"I even played a practice round here on Friday to get ready for today’s game. Golf isn't just about luck; it’s about preparation."

He emphasized the importance of both physical and mental preparation, saying, “Yesterday's practice focused on knowing where to position my ball during the competition. This allowed me to approach each hole confidently, making my game much easier.”

"This is my first win of the season, and I aim to continue improving and winning more events. This victory gives me momentum for my next tournament in Arua on June 19. Overall, I’ve been playing well, so this outcome wasn’t surprising," Basaliza added.

His birdies came on the par 5s holes 1 and 9, as well as the par 3 hole 2. The tournament was officially opened by Bunyoro Kingdom Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaga, who praised the golfers for their efforts in reviving an important local asset. Byakutaga also participated in planting trees around the course to support beautification and environmental sustainability.

"I am grateful to the management and organizers for restoring this course," Byakutaga said.

“I studied at Kabalega Secondary School in the late 70s, and this course was well-maintained back then, but it deteriorated over the years. We appreciate the effort to restore it."

He noted that the tournament formed part of the 31 coronation activities and highlighted the significance of combining sports with environmental conservation.

"Last year, we experienced dramatic climate changes with very high temperatures due to environmental degradation. By restoring this golf course alongside environmental efforts and celebrating our culture, we encourage fitness and health within the community. As a kingdom, we will support all initiatives to ensure the course is fully restored and that golf gains prominence in Bunyoro."

Byakutaga promised to take up the sport now that the golf course has been revitalized and encouraged other Banyoro to join him in supporting the Masindi Golf Club.

The event was organised in collaboration with the National Forestry Authority, Songora Maize Flour, and several individual supporters.
