Baryomunsi launches friendly football match between UPDF and Kanungu communities

The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, has launched a football match between the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) and Kanungu district select team as part of the 45th Tarehe Sita Anniversary celebrations.
The match, held in Kanungu on Wednesday, aimed to promote unity and strengthen relations between the UPDF and the local community.
In his remarks, Dr Baryomunsi emphasised the importance of community support for the security forces, saying, "It's from the community that the soldiers were drawn, and without the support of each other, there won't exist security personnel in the country."
A release from the Ministry of Defence and Veterans' Affairs states that Baryomunsi also highlighted the role of sports in bringing people together, stating, "It's only through sports that all people of different calibre unite; therefore, let the people of Kanungu use the opportunity to know the military better."

Brig. Gen. Tweheyo, representing the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, thanked the community for their warm hospitality and acceptance to the friendly match play with UPDF, saying, "Our relations and civil-military cooperation is key and forever shall be guarded jealously."
The host team, Kanungu Select, emerged victorious, winning the match 2-0. They were awarded medals and a trophy for their win.
The event aimed to promote unity and camaraderie between the UPDF and the local community, and was seen as a successful step in strengthening their relationship.
The national 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations in Kigezi sub-region kicked off on Monday, honouring the area’s historical support for the liberation struggle, particularly the Front for National Salvation (FRONASA) activities.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja presided over the events during the launch at the Shaza Grounds in Kisoro District.
Tarehe Sita, marked every February 6, commemorates the beginning of the National Resistance Army and the armed struggle.
This year, Kigezi was picked because of its pivotal role in Uganda’s liberation struggle.
The area served as a base for FRONASA supporters, including late Joseph Bitwari, James Karambuzi, David Kagoro Kangire, Bishop Festo Kivengere, Bishop Barnabas Hareimana, and others.
According to records, the communities in the region demonstrated unwavering support for the revolution, with some making the ultimate sacrifice.
The Kigezi sub-region, comprises of six districts (Rukiga, Rubanda, Rukungiri, Kanungu, Kabale and Kisoro).
