The lack of sports facilities in the country remains one of the biggest hindrances to sports development. Not even the government has many options to offer in that regard; apart from the Mandela National Stadium, the Teryet High Altitude Training Center, and the Lugogo Indoor and Cricket Oval that are under their supervision.
But these are just a drop in the ocean compared to the countrywide demand for these kinds of facilities.
Now a few smart private investors and sports lovers have stepped in to bridge the gap for some of the much-needed facilities like swimming pools.
Hardly two months after the Elite Swim and Gym, a new high-performance Sports centre in Ntinda was commissioned, another swimming pool/ cum sports complex is also set to be officially unveiled to the public soon.
The 25-metre, six-lane, Eritine Swimming Pool in Buwate, which neighbours Najjeera in Wakiso District is the latest addition of swimming facilities that are not only going to interest more from the surrounding communities into joining the sport but also help in the development of Uganda’s young swimmers.
It is the new home to the Sailfish Swim Club which has previously been housed at Gems Cambridge and Ambrosoli International Schools.
According to the Acting Director/engineer of the facility Frank Bugembe, this is one of two similar family projects that they are constructing with the other one in a much bigger place in Kalule, still in Wakiso.
“This facility is in a small area but we have tried to squeeze in several sports amenities and others that include a squash court, a gym, lounge, conference, and a cinema hall and it is now open to the public,” Bugembe said.
The first Dolphins Swim Club friendly against Seals, Jaguar, and Sailfish clubs was the inaugural gala held at the facility on Saturday.
