Amus College Women’s Football Club have etched their name into Ugandan football history, clinching their first-ever FUFA Women’s Cup title with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC.
The tightly contested final was held on Saturday at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
With just two minutes left in regulation time, Amus forward Shalyne Opisa applied pressure on Kawempe defender Samali Nakacwa, who inadvertently turned the ball into her own net—sealing the win for Amus in heartbreaking fashion for Kawempe.
The match was a defensive battle for much of the 90 minutes, with both sides struggling to create clear scoring opportunities. Amus came close in the 67th minute when Tamis Shafiga’s header narrowly missed the target. Kawempe responded seven minutes later, but Amus goalkeeper Ritah Namukisa made a crucial save to keep the score level.
Just as the game seemed destined for extra time, Amus launched one final attack that led to the decisive own goal. The Amus bench erupted in celebration as the final whistle confirmed their historic triumph.
In a symbolic moment of continuity, last year’s winning captain, Aminah Nakato of She Corporate FC, presented the trophy to the new champions at full-time.
A Gritty Road to Glory
Amus College WFC’s journey to the title was anything but easy. They began with a narrow 2-1 win over Isra Soccer Academy, received a bye in the next round, and then edged Wakiso Hill WFC 3-2 in a thrilling quarterfinal. Their most impressive performance came in the semifinals, where they stunned 2023 champions Uganda Martyrs Lubaga with a 4-2 aggregate win. Shalyne Opisa was instrumental throughout the campaign.
Kawempe’s Missed Opportunity
For Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow. A four-time league champion, Kawempe had a strong run to the final, defeating Royal Dreamers, Makerere University, and defending champions She Corporate before edging St. Noa Girls SS in the semifinals. Yet, the elusive FUFA Women’s Cup title remains just out of reach.
A Tradition of New Champions
This year’s final continued a remarkable trend—each edition of the FUFA Women’s Cup has produced a different winner. Now in its sixth edition, the tournament has crowned six unique champions since its inception in 2017, underscoring the depth and competitiveness of women’s football in Uganda.
