Uganda's Harriet Akot beat Kenya's Regina Nyaga 4-3 to emerge as the winner of the Moshi Open Darts Tournament in Tanzania in the women's singles category.
It was sweet revenge for Akot, who had earlier partnered with Maria Namuganyi and lost the doubles trophy to Nyaga and Suzan Wanja, falling 3-2 in the final played at 2 am.
Akot, the former Uganda Open champion, then put up a spirited fight to defeat the experienced Nyaga in the singles final in matches that went past midnight.
In the men's category, Uganda's pair of Solomon Omara and Stephen Abibi lost to Peter Wachuri and David Munywa in the quarter-finals. The two later fell in the final to Kenya's Charles Njuguna and David Kiptoo, losing 4-2 in a best-of-seven contest.
Solomon Omara, the team captain, attributed the defeat to fatigue, saying his players were tired by that time.
"There were many games, and by the time we got to the finals, it was 2 am, and players were fatigued and could not put up their best," Omara said.
"However, it was a good learning lesson. We have to prepare our players to endure any condition in the next competitions," he added.
The Uganda men's team also lost to Kenya's Stima 9-6 in the team finals.
The focus now turns to the Uganda Open and the Kenya Open championships, which are next in the queue.
