Christmas is a season of giving. Basing on the biblical story of the Three Wise Men from the East that brought gifts to baby Jesus, Christmas is a day when people and organizations reinforce the traditional values of selfless love and generosity.

And it is in that spirit that the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) have done their part. Days to Christmas, CAF announced increments to the cash prizes for the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

In the revised cash prizes, the champions will bank $10m (sh35b), which represents a 43% increase from the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast, where the champions received $7m (sh25b). The winners of the 2021 edition earned $5m (sh18b). The runners-up at AFCON 2025 will receive $4m (sh14b), while the two semi-finalists will earn $2.5m (sh8.9b) each.

African football governing body CAF indicated that the increments are intended to enhance the value, competitiveness, and international appeal of Africa’s premier football competition.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe (pictured below) announced the financial incentives during a media engagement, following a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee (EXCO) in Rabat, Morocco, a day before the tournament kicked off last weekend.

Motsepe pointed out that the decision to revise the financial rewards was part of CAF’s strategy to improve the commercial value and competitiveness of African football competitions.

“The country that wins the title in Morocco will receive $10m. This is an important goal. Around the world, prize money is increasing, and we have also decided to raise the prizes for the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup. The new amounts will be announced after January 18, 2026.”

In addition, Motsepe announced that CAF will also grant each African football federation $1m (sh3.5b) as part of its plan to support and develop football across the continent.

The financial rewards decision was just part of two ground-breaking announcements that also included plans to launch a new national teams competition called the “African Nations League.”

According to Motsepe, the tournament will be held during the FIFA international window, between October and November, and will include top African players. The competition will be organized in partnership with FIFA.

Uganda Cranes, who battled Tunisia in their first Group C match on Tuesday, will confront East Africa rivals Tanzania on Saturday before their final group game against Nigeria on December 30.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco rolled out a royal welcome to all the 24 teams that are contesting for honours in Africa’s premier competition – the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament is rolling through the festive season, before the curtains come down on January 18, 2026. And for the first time in the tournament’s history, all the participating teams have been provided with five-star amenities across the six host cities.

Cranes are booked at the STORY Le Carrousel Rabat, which is nestled a few miles from the Atlantic. The STORY Le Carrousel Rabat looks perfect accommodation for Cranes. It is more than a place to stay. It’s a combination of unforgettable experiences. Cranes’ designated training ground is a few minutes from the hotel.
