Acholi Zone dominates early at USSSA National Ball Games II in Tororo

The competition, which features 8,380 athletes (4,873 girls and 3,507 boys) from across Uganda, kicked off on Sunday with an official opening ceremony at King George Stadium in Tororo Municipality.

As the 2025 USSSA National Ball Games II continue at St. Peter’s College Tororo and Tororo Girls, the Acholi Zone, the 2024 defending champions in athletics, has once again asserted its dominance.

The competition, which features 8,380 athletes (4,873 girls and 3,507 boys) from across Uganda, kicked off on Sunday with an official opening ceremony at King George Stadium in Tororo Municipality.

By the end of Day Two, the Acholi Zone had already taken a commanding lead, amassing a total of seven medals.

In 200 meters in the boys’ category saw Joshua Bwambale of (Bunyoro zone) underlined his determination as he clocked 22.2 to beat Joshua Okware of (BukedI zone) who finished second with 22.4 while Francis Ocaya (Mpigi zone) in the bronze medalist category has he clocked 22.6 Under the girl’s cluster Mary Hope Awat (Mpigi zone) showed great determination by thrashing her counterpart Mary Apoko (Bunyoro zone) with the time range of 24.3 against 25.4 living Agness Achen of Mpigi zone in the third position with 25.8.

Javelin girls recorded Goretti Agemo of Acholi zone stood in position one having thrown it to arrange (40.61m) against 40.07m recorded by Jenneth Anena of Acholi zone and Sande Akello in the third position with the distance throw of 39.03m.

Under Boys long jump, David Wamono of (Bukedi Zone) won a gold medal for his region having jumped 6:56m against 6.52m made by his counterpart Saladin Kicaber of (Acholi zone) while Benard Odoki in the bronze medal bracket having recorded 6.40m.

Acholi Zone this time has fielded 51 athletes, 28 boys and 23 girls competing across a range of track and field disciplines including 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, javelin, discus, shot put, high jump, and long jump.

Head Coach Oyat Gilbert praised the spirit and discipline of his athletes, noting that this year’s camp has been more intense and focused than ever before.

“The morale is high. The athletes know what’s at stake. We’ve focused on both endurance and technique and our goal is clear: retain the overall trophy.”

Among the stars to watch is Adokorach Sharon from YY Okot Memorial in Kitgum, who will be competing in the 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m events.

“I’ve trained hard. My target is gold in all my events. I want to make my school, my zone, and my family proud,” Sharon said with determination.

Chirstopher Mugisha Banage, USSSA chief Executive officer said a nine-day competitive championship hosted in St Peters college and Tororo girls is used for identifying schools and athletes that will represent Uganda during the Federation of East Africa schools’ Sports games to be hosted in Kakamega, Kenya.

“We have observed an increase in the number of zones and schools that have presented athletes for the FEASSA qualifiers this time. And we hope to have good teams,” Banage said

The 2025 Ball Games II FEASSA qualifiers will conclude on Friday this week at King George stadium.
