The Virunga Gorilla Marathon returns for its third edition on May 30 in Kisoro. The event was officially launched on Friday, April 24, at Golden Tulip Canaan Hotel in Kampala.

The launch brought together key stakeholders, including government officials and sponsors, and also featured the unveiling of the marathon kit.

Tusker Lite, a household name in Uganda's running community, has maintained its strong support for the event and will elevate the marathon's after-party with a Neon Rave experience.

"Last year the marathon attracted 1,000 participants, and this year we aim to triple that number. We expect runners from across East Africa and beyond. Our goal is to grow the marathon into one of the region's leading experiential events while deepening its impact on conservation, tourism, and community development," Kamukama said.

The State Minister for Tourism, Martin Mugarra, praised the marathon for going beyond boosting tourism to also uncover talent. He also commended the event's theme, "Running for Climate Action," noting its importance.

"I'm happy to see this marathon growing because many events don't last long. I hope it keeps getting bigger and better in the coming years," he said, adding that the government is committed to partnering with events that blend sport with important causes like conservation.

Race director John Tibita revealed that the event will feature a full marathon (42km), half marathon (21km), 10km, and 6km races. In a new twist, the event has introduced an 112-kilometer ultra run, ushering trail running into the marathon.

"Trail running takes athletes off paved roads and onto natural terrain, often involving steep climbs, uneven paths, and changing landscapes that test both endurance and adaptability. Runners will pass through rainforest, rolling hills, and ancient lava fields while also experiencing the warmth of local communities, including the Batwa. It is a demanding but unforgettable challenge for those ready to push far beyond the marathon distance," Tibita said.

Speaking for the Tusker Lite brand, Roy Ronald Tumwizire said they are excited to see the growing momentum the event continues to build, even at this relatively early stage of its journey.

"For Tusker Lite, marathons are a natural fit. As a low-carb beer that champions active lifestyles, we feel right at home supporting these events," he said.

"Tusker Lite is all about encouraging people to live active, social, and fulfilling lives. We want to fuel experiences that celebrate individuality, progressiveness, and vibrant social energy. Tusker Lite celebrates people who live boldly, chase their passions, and find balance in enjoying life responsibly," he added.

"Expect artist performances, premium refreshments, and an unforgettable celebration atmosphere."

Registration for the marathon is open at Sh70,000 for East African citizens and $30 (Sh120,000) for international runners. Runners can buy the race kit via Airtel Money payment code 4405438.

The other partners for the run include Stanbic Bank (the tree planting partners), Dorotia Bwindi Eco-Tourism Resort, and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), who were represented by Diana Ondoga, Emmanuel Mugisha, Dorcus Rukundo Twesigomwe, and UWA Ambassador Bridget Karungi.
