The 2025 Taibah Schools Badminton Tournament has officially been launched, with over 30 schools confirming participation in the event, which kicks off this Friday at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.

The tournament was unveiled at Taibah International Cambridge School, marking the return of the competition after its last edition in 2020.

Simon Mugabi, CEO of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA), highlighted the association’s strategic focus on doubles events, which have shown greater potential for Ugandan players to excel on the international stage.

“We are introducing doubles for the first time in this tournament to build a strong foundation in this discipline. Our players have won bronze medals in international competitions hosted by Uganda over the past three years, including the juniors’ event held last month,” Mugabi explained.

The tournament will feature competitions in the under-10, under-13, under-15, and under-18 age categories, providing a platform for young talent to showcase their skills.

Oskar Semweya, Director of Taibah International Schools, emphasized the importance of sports in child development, particularly in fostering confidence, creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills.

“Sports are essential for young children as they promote physical and mental fitness. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the absence of sports led to many children becoming overweight. As educators, we are delighted to see children engaged in active play, even if it means dirty shorts and shirts,” Semweya remarked.

He also highlighted Taibah’s commitment to nurturing young talent through initiatives like the badminton tournament and the Independence Cup for schools in Entebbe and Wakiso.

This year’s tournament has seen a significant increase in investment, with Taibah injecting sh11 million, up from sh6 million in the 2020 edition.

Winners will be awarded team and individual medals, as well as trophies, as they compete for glory in one of the country’s most anticipated school badminton events.

The 2025 Taibah Schools Badminton Tournament promises to be a thrilling showcase of young talent and a testament to the growing popularity of the sport in Uganda.
